Newsletter from your Chairman January 2022
Hi everyone,
I hope this newsletter finds you all well. It may be a little late, but I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year. In the last newsletter I mentioned that I could not possibly predict whether our January meeting would go ahead; it would depend on Covid. Having consulted widely I have to advise you that the meeting on the 26th January is cancelled. Politicians are saying we must get used to coronavirus and get back to normal but the infection rate with the new variant is so high in our area that we have decided it would be too risky to hold the Speaker Meeting in Crockham Hill hall. As a family we started 2022 in isolation with 50% of our adult family down with Covid and 100% of the grandchildren infected. Thankfully all are now finally testing negative and the infection for all was not severe - but it did prove to us just how infectious this Omicron variant really is!
It is good to see that the infection rates are levelling off and I am hopeful that we will be able to get back to our usual programme in February. At the time of writing this newsletter we are trying to re-book the speaker, Michael Smith, for a later meeting.
The weather for the last few weeks has been so grey and miserable I felt the need for a picture to remind us of better times. This one is from the island of Mauritius looking from Chamarel towards Le Morne (in the distance capped with cloud). At least here the days have started to get longer so hopefully it won’t be too long till we get some better weather. My garden, probably like many of yours at the moment, could double up as a water feature!
I will keep you informed about our plans for February as soon as we can – I hope to report on groups getting back to normal as well.
So, the usual message again – ‘take care, stay safe and stay healthy’. Also beware of the many scams there are at the moment, both through your phone and emails. Remember, if a deal you weren’t expecting sounds too good to be true, then the chances are it is a scam! Don’t be caught out.
PS – have you thought about joining our committee? We have two definite vacancies we would like to fill:
- Organiser for the speakers at our monthly meetings
- Organiser for our portable u3a notice board that we have at our monthly meetings.
Interested? Then email me at the address above. You would be so welcome!
